WHERL examines the impact of extending paid work in later life on health and wellbeing. Funded by the ESRC and MRC under the Extending Working Lives Consortia Grant Call, WHERL is a three year academic research project led by the Institute of Gerontology at King’s College London in collaboration with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London; the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto; the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London and the Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing, University of Manchester; together with project partners The Pensions Policy Institute, Age UK, and the Department for Work and Pensions.
The projects cover three main areas:
- a comprehensive assessment of the lifecourse determinants and consequences for health and well-being of working up to and beyond State Pension Age in the UK
- An evaluation of whether (and how) these relationships have changed for different cohorts and over time
- Modelling of the financial consequences of working up to and beyond State Pension Age in the UK for those with different lifecourse trajectories
