The Disability Advocacy Research in Europe (DARE) Marie Curie ETN, based at NUI Galway, Ireland, is seeking applications for the following fully funded PhD position at NUI Galway: Disability, Old Age and the Life Course: Voices of Experience. This individual project will explore the continuities and discontinuities in policy and legal discourses around disability and old age and especially the absence of authentic voices in the relevant debates. It will also explore the differences between the voices and their relative absence in policy debates.
The primary aim of DARE is to equip a new generation of researchers to respond to global challenges facing persons with disabilities and policy makers. Its goal is to give legitimacy, through research, to the lived experience of persons with disabilities, as a basis for law reform Fifteen Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will be recruited across the network and will explore and develop recommendations for disability law and policy reform in light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The successful candidate will be employed as an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) at NUI Galway and will be enrolled in a PhD programme. Co-supervision will be provided by Prof. Eilionoir Flynn from the Centre for Disability Law and Policy (CDLP) and Prof. Kieran Walsh and Dr. Sinéad Keogh from the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (ICSG). The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to spend three months at AGE Platform Europe under the supervision of Maciej Kucharczyk and three months at the University of Iceland under the supervision of Professor Rannveig Traustadóttir.
The following eligibility requirements apply:
1. At the time of recruitment by NUI Galway, the candidate must be in the first four years of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
2. At the time of selection, the candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (e.g. work or study) in Ireland for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to September 1st 2019 (Marie Curie mobility rule)
3. The candidate must be a native English speaker OR a non-native English speaker who has passed the academic IELTS (minimum score 7.5) or TOEFL internet-based (minimum score of 113) tests
