PhD workshop,  24.-26.8. Jyväskylä, Finland
An exploration of methodological issues in the study of age and ageing
Organized by the ESA Research Network on Ageing in Europe and the Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare).
Overview
We invite PhD students and early-career researchers in sociology, social policy and related
disciplines to participate in a multidisciplinary workshop to explore methodological issues in
ageing research. Ageing is one of the most salient and pressing matters facing contemporary societies. Its impacts span from the personal experience of ageing and the negotiation of relationships, to national policy initiatives on the configuration of health and social care services. It is therefore essential that varied and robust research approaches are applied to the understanding of ageing. A multifaceted social scientific research corpus, underpinned by rigorous and reflexive methodological engagement, is a crucial resource that can positively influence the nature of ageing societies.
The workshop
The aim of this workshop is to critically reflect on how different research designs and methods can elucidate the experience and impacts of age and ageing. Among other things, this could include the exploration of the format and nature of informal and formal care in relation to older people. Other potential themes include the social and cultural context of ageing, and contemporary developments such as technology and digitalisation.
The workshop will enable each participant to present their own research approach and its
application to the field of ageing. Participants will present on their submitted paper and will
receive valuable feedback on their work from their peers, and senior academics. All attendees  will thus have extensive opportunity to discuss how they are applying the methodology of their research to the explication of their research topic.
Any aspect of research design and methodology can be considered, including data collection, data analysis, ethics, and linking theory and concepts with empirical data.
All types of research strategy can be accommodated at the workshop, whether quantitative,
qualitative or mixed methods. In addition, applicants are very welcome regardless of their own stage in the PhD journey.
Senior academics will be present at the workshop as tutors,  and will also deliver keynote
presentations at the workshop. Confirmed keynote speakers are:
●   Prof Ricca Edmondson, NUI Galway
●   Prof Chris Gilleard, University College, London
●   Ruth Bartlett, University of Southampton & VID Specialized University, Oslo
